In Marvel Knights: Spiderman #8, Eddie Brock gave his symbiote, which he needs to stay keep him from dying from cancer, to the son of mobster Don Fortunato. The Fortunato was so pathetic however, the symbiote abandoned him in mid-air causing him to fall to his death. Later, we learn Eddie Brock has slit his wrists and probably won't survive the night.

Without Brock, Venom can't exist. Oh sure, the symbiote can bound to almost anyone, creating a dozen possible stories. One idea I read about was to have it bond to JJJ (shudder). But Eddie Brock is the soul of Venom, a favorite character of mine, and it would be a great loss to Spiderman fans everywhere for him to die.
I'm not sure if the symbiont merges with Brock again, though I'm sure it will, I do know that the symbiont, during that period of time, merges with the criminal known as the Scorpion.
